Building bridges from manure to energy

The dairy industry with it’s more than 9 million cows is largely an untapped energy source. Forward thinking farmers like Peter Melnik of Bar-Way Farm Inc. and energy developer Vanguard Renewables plan to change that. The largest Farm Powered Anaerobic Digester built in partnership with Vanguard to date, the project at Melnik’s farm in Deerfield, Mass. will combine 9,200 tons of manure and more than 30,000 tons of food waste in a sealed anaerobic digester to create renewable energy, heat and hot water for the farm, and organic fertilizer.
