Through a national network of facilities and partnerships, we recover food and farm waste, convert it into energy, and return value to the grid, the land, and the communities we serve.

Collecting Food & Beverage Waste

Our advanced Organics Recycling Areas (ORA) depackage and process expired goods, off-spec batches, or unsafe to eat food and beverage products. The extracted food and beverage material is then recycled at a Vanguard Renewables anaerobic digester, combined with dairy manure, and converted into renewable energy, or taken for composting or animal feed at a strategic partner facility.

Depackaging & Pre‑processing

Our anaerobic digesters convert dairy manure and organic waste into renewable energy through the use of microorganisms. This process simultaneously produces low-carbon fertilizer and dry animal bedding for use by our farm partners.

Careers

The company was founded with three primary goals: produce renewable energy, sustain farms for future generations, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

2014

Acquired the first two existing facilities in Hadley and Rutland, MA and began increasing their capacities.

2015

Anaerobic digester in Deerfield, MA was completed and began accepting food and beverage waste for recycling.

2016

Truck hauling food and beverage waste to a farm powered anaerobic digester

Anaerobic digester in Deerfield, MA was fully operational and commissioned.

2017

Anaerobic digestion creating renewable energy from food waste recycling

Anaerobic digester in Haverhill, MA was completed and began taking food waste.

2018

The Company lauched its nationally-recognized strategic partnership with Dominion Energy to develop manure-only to renewable energy facilities across the U.S. Anaerobic digester in Spencer, MA was completed and commissioned.

2019

Launched the Farm Powered Strategic Alliance along with founding members Starbucks, Unilever, and Dairy Farmers of America. Facility in Haverhill, MA was completed and commissioned. Organics Receiving Area in Agawam, MA began depackaging and recycling unsellable food and beverage waste at Vanguard's anaerobic digestion facilities.

2020

Anaerobic digester facility in Salisbury, VT was completed and commissioned.

2021

Vanguard Renewables became a portfolio company of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a part of BlackRock.

2022

Vanguard Renewables announced an innovative, first-of-its kind Renewable Natural Gas partnership with AstraZeneca.

2023

Celebrating a decade of clean energy innovation with 7 operational sites, 3 under construction, and more slated to begin construction this year. The company is on track to have 50+ anaerobic digestion projects across the United States by 2028.
